Small.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Just do it.<br />
<br />
Anything.<br />
<br />
That thing that you thought about it.<br />
<br />
Just do it.<br />
<br />
Just say it.<br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: center;">Anything.</span><br />
<br />
Those words that were running rampant right behind your eyes.<br />
<br />
Just say them.<br />
<br />
Whatever it is, large or small or in between.<br />
<br />
Perfectly imperfect.<br />
<br />
Difficult, messy, wrong, weird, scary, insignificant.<br />
<br />
Just do the something. However small it may be.<br />
<br />
Like this post right here. Is it really what I want to say? Is it the right way to say it? Is it worth saying?<br />
<br />
I DON'T KNOW.<br />
<br />
But I told myself that I would start publishing a post every Monday. So, here ya go. It's something.<br />
<br />
Is it go big or go home?<br />
<br />
NOPE.<br />
<br />
This.<br />
<br />
These words.<br />
<br />
They are my small somethings.<br />
<br />
And I'm sharing them with you.<br />
<br />
<br />

And life and death.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This post is about food. But more importantly, it's about my grandpa. My Pawpaw departed from his earthly body on December 12, 2015. He was 92 years old. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you're reading this, you probably know that I recently moved to New York City from Beaumont, Texas. From Big Money to the Big Apple. I've been ruminating on blog topics since I arrived, feeling the urge to share my journey with whoever feels like reading. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then Pawpaw went and had a stroke and decided it was his time to go. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, to begin my journey of sharing about my journey, I will start with where I came from. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
René Castillo was born and raised in Chile. He moved to America when he was 22, married and had 5 children, one of them my lovely mother Rosemary.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWW7FEcqocioePJMtfEvgdZx_4V0uXl-SrISejXbMh8e9Yb4UXqoDINn45MXZ5QUyD6Y_nQI2AnSMSP6H5NokaeMCbjuK3CIA5hjDS_IYB8RUJ305wA4GJ3AY0x1oiy9ga4-Fv3Gn6M60/s1600/Castillo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWW7FEcqocioePJMtfEvgdZx_4V0uXl-SrISejXbMh8e9Yb4UXqoDINn45MXZ5QUyD6Y_nQI2AnSMSP6H5NokaeMCbjuK3CIA5hjDS_IYB8RUJ305wA4GJ3AY0x1oiy9ga4-Fv3Gn6M60/s320/Castillo.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Memaw Joan, Pawpaw René, Uncle Ricky and baby Rosemary (aka Mommy). I would've fallen for him too, Memaw! What a good looking family!<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fast forward 40-something years. The summer I turned 20, my Pawpaw and I traveled to Chile for 2 months - just him and I, granddaughter and grandfather. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhBHIEDd0vRGuNSo9-zphmbX7nPeh3GMjb8qINKMEG-0cYGptR0Wtqko2kHgyG18KTO5ejuT7krYVGM3MLUzctjqmW8ZFTL93a4mdy9LblyBO36Zgd2cq8294ewGYwZnI3vKqyxt0rChA/s1600/Pawpaw+and+me.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhBHIEDd0vRGuNSo9-zphmbX7nPeh3GMjb8qINKMEG-0cYGptR0Wtqko2kHgyG18KTO5ejuT7krYVGM3MLUzctjqmW8ZFTL93a4mdy9LblyBO36Zgd2cq8294ewGYwZnI3vKqyxt0rChA/s320/Pawpaw+and+me.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pawpaw (AGE 77) and I (AGE 20) in the airport on the way to Chile. Note the Chilean flag on his shirt. It is often mistaken for the Texas flag, haha! And my Beaumont t-shirt and cowgirl hat. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The viaje (trip) was incredible, and also a turning point in our relationship. Traveling with someone is a very revealing experience, and we came to see each other as real people, not in the idealized way most grandchildren and grandparents see each other.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One way in which we bonded was our mutual passion for the delicious Chilean cuisine, especially the fresh bread. In fact, on his deathbed, during a Skype session with him and my family, when he was semi-conscius, I mentioned the bread to him and he practically smacked his lips!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As life would have it, there just so happens to be a Chilean bakery within a 15-minute walking distance of my new residence in the neighborhood of Astoria, New York. IMAGINE THAT.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So to celebrate my Pawpaw and my Chilean heritage, the day after he passed, I did exactly as he would have me do, and I ate some of our favorite foods.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Logically, I started with dessert. Té con leche (tea with milk, plus some sugar) and a cookie, know as an Alfajore. It is a crisp, not-too-sweet cookie, layered with dulce de leche. Also known as cajeta, this caramel-like spread is used in Chile as much as we use peanut butter in the US.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrzVcnIIrQ5OSdszmq7f2RJSmYLM6pH4OBzGfXcQP09GyEkBtmwmr2G_kXMeAlBejpP9EyGdTnrOrPhcUwo9S5uBKMjvNX_KNUMJlj7xqnTWTdpkB3t784oetuAgIG_ZcH23mBRl8KdnY/s1600/IMG_2663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrzVcnIIrQ5OSdszmq7f2RJSmYLM6pH4OBzGfXcQP09GyEkBtmwmr2G_kXMeAlBejpP9EyGdTnrOrPhcUwo9S5uBKMjvNX_KNUMJlj7xqnTWTdpkB3t784oetuAgIG_ZcH23mBRl8KdnY/s320/IMG_2663.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">During another Chile trip, Pawpaw notoriously snuck Alfajores like this one when he was forbidden to do so because of his diabetes. He was a rebel.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a recipe very similar to the one I enjoyed yesterday:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.enmicocinahoy.cl/2014/04/chilean-alfajores/">Alfajores Recipe</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And for the main course - a Chilean hot dog and an emapanada de pino, followed by chicken cazuela, all enhanced by a fiery, blood-red pebre sauce.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A completo (Chilean hot dog) and empanada, with a side of the house pebre.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="text-align: center;">I am sure that Pawpaw would have enjoyed their version of the empanada de pino as much as I did. This iconic Chilean delicacy is filled with chunks of tender beef, onions and raisins, an olive and a piece of boiled egg.</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I don't know if he would have approved of the exact recipe, but I know Pawpaw would have appreciated the spice level of the pebre. It was hot!</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In a freshly baked bun, this Chilean completo is topped in the sterotypical Chilean street-style: with sauerkraut, diced tomatoes, mashed avocado and mayo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And last but certainly not least, the chicken cazuela.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's hard to pinpoint Pawpaw's favorite food. He loved to eat. But he was constantly talking about soup. That it was hard to find a good soup in the US nowadays, that the poor people knew how to make the best soups, using what they had on hand. He obviously held the Chilean cazuela as the soup of all soups. And it's easy to understand why.</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
This post is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to describing my connection to my Pawpaw. He lived an adventurous life, rich and deep, full of the lightness and darkness of the human experience.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our relationship as well was unique, very layered and complex. His passing at this time, at the beginning of this phase of my life, is no coincidence. I know I have much to learn from our mystic connection, about unconditional love, the true value of family, and of grace. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thank you René Castillo, for being my Pawpaw. </div>

This video contains adult language.<br /><br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dw1pC7AWIwAC_8UoP68cOEnIhVYcRLwZm_TooKoW8PUbdfAAaj4p5odOKTaXpCgq3rvl6fvh0d_6GFQ5dT1' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
I am a singer. I knew this when I was 3 years old. And when I was 33 1/2, I remembered.<br />
<br />
There have been many factors that contributed to my late-bloomage, and one of those is the debilitating grip of perfectionism.<br />
<br />
My mother tells me how I would erase holes in my paper in kindergarten when I got an answer wrong. A memory I have of that time is of a coloring page, a picture of a Native American with grapes, and proudly coloring those grapes in a circular motion, INSIDE THE LINES.<br />
<br />
Get it right, Do it perfectly, You must be the best.<br />
<br />
These were my subconscious mantras of perfectionism. Instead of appreciating my multitude of gifts and talents, I only wanted to be THE BEST at something.<br />
<br />
And now, as I prepare to record a 5-song EP in the studio, there is still that voice whispering...<br />
<br />
"You're not where you want to be. Your voice is not that great. You can be better. You're not ready. You don't want the world to hear your voice as it is now. You still have a long way to go. If they hear you now, they won't want to hear more."<br />
<br />
The overpowering tendency to compare myself to others still lingers. The great judge and jury in my mind that tells me I'm not good enough still hands down judgement.<br />
<br />
And so...<br />
<br />
Even though I'm not where I want to be,<br />
I am still FINDING my voice,<br />
I don't LOVE everything that I hear (sometimes I even cringe),<br />
I want to be better,<br />
I wish that my voice sounded different RIGHT NOW...<br />
<br />
Despite all these thoughts and misgivings, I share this video with you.... One of my favorite songs to perform. I know most of us can relate to the sentiment that Radiohead captured so perfectly in their lyrics and chords.<br />
<br />
This is my journey.<br />
<br />
*Special thanks to Ann Sheppard of Southeast Texas Music Movement for capturing this and other videos of local musicians and her commitment to the Southeast Texas music scene.<br />

Now what does that mean? I have no idea...but I want to learn. Here's a little story...I went to Chinese New Year this year with my dear friend Summer Lydick and her mama Micah. During this ceremony, you receive a prayer bracelet, much like a friendship bracelet from the priest at the Buddhist temple. When he ties it on your wrist, you make a wish for what you want to receive in the year. Then, when the bracelet falls off, your wish has come true. <br /><br />This year, I wished for grace... So, I'm wearing my bracelet and wearing my bracelet, always a little reminder of grace near me. I accidentally cut part of it one time when I'm cutting some wristbands off, so I think it will fall off rather quickly. Nope, it stays around for a while. One day, I finally notice it's gone. And I realize it's been gone for a few days. I've also been noticing this thing, on the floor in my bedroom, lying there like a little piece of trash or something. I don't think too much of it, and I've been too busy to sweep, so it just stays there, small but noticeable. Finally, I get a few minutes and use my little hand broom to tidy up. I bend down to sweep up this little piece of trash and realize, there it is, my grace, here in front of me the whole time, in plain sight, in my room where I live, not lost somewhere out in the world, but close to me, just waiting for me to notice it. As a friend just told me, no more asking for it. You must imagine me saying that in a deepish jolly voice, cause that's how it sounds! So, being the perfectionist that I am trying not to be :), I normally attempt to post only when I have a photo to go along, to make it more interesting, ya know...But alas no photo today. </span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span></span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">However, it is the beginning of the New Year, 2010. The perfect year. 10 is half of 20. A time for adventures and new things. A time for a blog post with no photo. Cause maybe just maybe, one person will read it and smile!! Even without a photo. And okay, I have to tell the whole story...I have been inspired by Julie and Julia. You know, the book that inspired the movie with Amy Adams and Meryl Streep. Which I haven't seen, but would now like to. </span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span></span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">So, if you've lived under a rock, I'll fill you in a bit. Julie Powell is a real person who cooked her way through Julia Child's classic cookbook, </span><u><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Mastering the Art of French Cooking</span></u><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> (or MaTArOFCo, or something along those lines.) She blogged about her trials and tribulations in a very honest way, shall we say, in her own voice, potty mouth and all. All this she turned into a memoir/novel which I find very charming, and then it was turned into a movie. With Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. </span></span></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-size:130%;">So I'm doing all this in order that one day I may have a movie made about me. Maybe with Dakota Fanning. JUST kidding :) But really I do like to write, and it's the first day of 2010, so I thought what the heck. My beautiful fam is bugging me to go eat pork, cabbage, and cornbread with them...guess I should :)</span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-size:130%;">May we all have an exciting year full of yummy food, family, and doing what we love. AMEN!!</span>Grace Mathis, Beaumont's original beauty geekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14061695276673672426noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3783142161651623715.post-41532609313811471082009-12-03T14:48:00.000-08:002009-12-03T14:58:30.037-08:00Music and Makeup Movies<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVzpOMbln3HPN0yvfDbB2dr-Plprjd7FtPr86SBHIWPOpDNwA-My878ebkytkcFLZmkA3DzK81QB6oekV_XJKcp_7z55zCklmLoy19_OexHcM4llIqkryxKPbSwnKZqmI-joIX34Xi2MI/s1600-h/IMG_3999.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVzpOMbln3HPN0yvfDbB2dr-Plprjd7FtPr86SBHIWPOpDNwA-My878ebkytkcFLZmkA3DzK81QB6oekV_XJKcp_7z55zCklmLoy19_OexHcM4llIqkryxKPbSwnKZqmI-joIX34Xi2MI/s400/IMG_3999.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411146005052578082" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Beauty comes in many forms...My favorite of which is beautiful music.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">If you are a lover of beautiful music, then you MUST go out and buy this album!! And I do mean the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">album</span> "O" by Damien Rice. Not the I-tunes! Because then, you would not be able to flip through the provocative and haunting images that he has created in the liner notes.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">A couple of my personal faves on here: Volcano, Blower's Daughter, and Cold Water.</div><div style="text-align: center;">Hopefully my lil' sis and I will eventually play Cold Water at Log On Open mic night!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Why is this album so necessary? It is full of beauty, melancholy, and hope. There are so many beautiful musical surprises that will astound you...the vocals are haunting and amazing. The lyrics are powerful, simple, and true. The melodies, harmonies, and dissonance throughout will humble you and break your heart.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Mr. Rice has shared his soul and I hope it warms your heart as it has mine. Go buy it today!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">And on another (non-musical) beauty note :)...Thanks to all for watching my Merry and Bright video this week! <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 51, 153);">I am the Elle Video Star for the week!!
